SK-II

For 30 years, SK-II has touched the lives of millions of women around the world by giving them the miracle rebirth of skin and soul.

The story of SK-II began at a sake brewery in Japan, where scientists noticed that elderly workers had wrinkled faces, but extraordinarily soft and youthful-looking hands. These hands were in constant contact with the sake fermentation process. It took years of research for scientists to isolate the miracle ingredient: Pitera™, a naturally-derived liquid from the yeast fermentation process.

Since then, SK-II with Pitera™ has become a special secret shared by celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and women around the world. A leading skincare brand in 13 markets, it continues to deliver the promise of crystal clear skin through well-loved products, including Facial Treatment Essence.

Inventing a Category

When the first bottle of Facial Treatment Essence was introduced in Japan on December 21, 1980, it created a whole-new skincare category that lives on today.

The launch of the SK-II Signs Treatment family sought to change women’s attitude to aging with a new philosophy: “Beautifying Aging.” SK-II later went on to introduce one of the most breakthrough insights of “Skin Power,” once again changing the anti-aging landscape.

SK-II was one of the first brands in the world to launch facial masks. It was also the first to combine two key mask innovations: a two-piece concept to address different needs of different parts of the face, and a stretchable mask material to give a lifting effect.

Year after year since 2002, SK-II has continued to raise the bar in whitening, leading in the development of dedicated spot and tone care solutions. On its 30th anniversary, the brand has once again redefined standards with its Cellumination line—a holistic approach to go beyond white to aura-bright.

SK-II changed the face of the foundation category as well. This began with breakthrough ionizing technology in its Air Touch Foundation innovation, and continued with foundations made from over 75 percent skincare cream.
